About Me

The art world has evolved because of the selfie and social media-driven world of today. Realistic figurative art in the traditional sense is no longer in vogue. Painted figures in a contemporary style have changed this genre of art. With a single brushstroke, a figure captivates and tells a story that is left up to interpretation on the part of the viewer. Though each figure has at least one story told from a range of perspectives, there may not be a singular linear story.

Artist Statement

Ellie Topnik resides in East St. Paul, Manitoba, and works from her home studio. She uses oil paint on canvas or wood panels as her medium. Growing up on a Manitoban prairie farm, she was influenced by her mother's desire to paint "the setting sun”, but explored her own way of expressing herself through the human figure with narrative potential. During her career of working as a nurse, with mostly female co-workers she observed the struggles of women. The artist depicts the body language, facial expressions and, posturing as a message to tell its story. Facial expressions and the spoken word do not always line up, making body language the dominant communication exchange. Despite the figure being realistic she has incorporated abstract composition and frequently adds the use of pattern leaning the work in a more contemporary direction.

Over the years she has explored a variety of mediums before her current choice of oil, which easily allows a change of composition without compromising the work. The use of a limited pallet and tone contributes to the narrative.
